USA National Train Day: Amtrak Turns 40

Amtrak has repainted locomotives in previous paint schemes to celebrate.

Amtrak started National Train Day in 2008 to commemorate the anniversary on May 10, 1869 of the transcontinental railroad. Activities are planned at over 100 Amtrak stations and railroad venues across the country, check our Railway Weekender or Amtrak’s National Train Day website to see what’s on near you.

Amtrak also turns 40 this week and it’s throwing itself a year-long party with the debut this Saturday of an Exhibit Train at Union Station in Washington.

Two baggage cars have been revamped as display spaces for railway memorabilia and artifacts, including period uniforms, dinnerware and vintage advertising. The free exhibit will make two-day stops at various depots (for the first three-month schedule go to amtrak40th.com). Most locations also will have train-themed kids’ activities at Chuggington Kids Depot.

Also in celebration of its 40th anniversary, Amtrak has announced a Kids Ride Free promotion, but you’ll have to act fast. Children 2 to 15 accompanied by an adult paying the regular fare, ride free through June 9. But reservations (800-USA-RAIL) must be made by May 6 and at least three days before departure. Use discount code H859. Some blackout days and route restrictions apply.
