Snowflake Special Excursion on the CTA

Join the members of the Illinois Railway Museum as they tour the Chicago Transit Authority’s “L” lines. The six car train will consist of Boeing Vertol-built 2400-series cars, serving Chicagoans since 1976-78 and scheduled for replacement by the 5000 series cars. Beginning at Harlem terminal on the west end of the Green Line (Lake St.), the trip will travel on almost every line, plus lots of non-revenue and yard trackage. This Snowflake Special excursion is a fundraiser to preserve a pair of 2400 series cars, like those in the photo.

Last year, we sold out and had to turn patrons away. You are strongly advised to buy your tickets in advance.

Departure: 8:45 am (note, earlier than last year) from Harlem/Lake (Green Line) station, at Harlem Ave. and Circle Ave. in Forest Park/Oak Park. Gather in passageway under tracks near Marion auxiliary entrance at east end of station. Free parking on Sundays is available in commuter lots at Harlem and South Blvd. (enter from South Blvd.) and north of the station on North Blvd. between Harlem and Marion. Metered parking spaces along South Blvd. and Circle Ave. are also free on Sundays. Do not park in private lots. Riders may also board at Harlem inbound at approximately 9:00 am, at UIC-Halsted Blue Line station at approximately 9:40 am, or at Clark/Lake Blue Line (subway) station at approximately 9:55 am. To board train at either of these alternate stations, hold up ticket in plain view of motorman and excursion crew.

Fare: $42.00 per person. Orders received after March 17 will be held for pickup at Harlem/Lake. No refunds after March 17, 2012.

Lunch: One hour will be given at lunch stops around the Loop. A restaurant list is provided to riders.

Note: The trip will conclude at Harlem/Lake about 5:40 pm. We will make earlier stops upon request. 2400-series cars are wheelchair-accessible; consult CTA for station accessibility.
