Royal Hudson 75th Birthday Celebration Launches Fundraiser

British Columbia’s iconic Royal Hudson steam locomotive #2860 celebrated its 75th birthday in grand style on Saturday, June 27 at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish, BC, launching a fundraiser for the next phase of its restoration and return to steam.

The classic steam locomotive was displayed outside during the day on the turntable, a special treat for photographers. At 6:30PM, the Royal Hudson made a grand entrance into the CN Roundhouse & Conference Centre where guests enjoyed a great dinner and gala evening. The event raised over $10,000 to launch the fundraising for the project.

The WCRA successfully raised almost $1 million in funds and undertook the first phase of restoration (a rebuild of the boiler) retuning the locomotive to steam in September, 2006. It operated a number of special event trips 2007 to 2010. This next phase of work will recertify the boiler work already done and then focus on the rebuilding of the locomotive’s huge 75 inch driving wheels and running gear.

The Royal Hudson was built in June 1940 for the Canadian Pacific Railway, but is best known for its 25 years of service (1974 – 1999) for the Province of British Columbia on the North Vancouver – Squamish Royal Hudson excursion train. After coming out of service in 1999, the Province put her up for disposition and the locomotive was then preserved by the District of Squamish and the West Coast Railway Association (WCRA). It moved to the Heritage Park in 2002, where it is on display and available for viewing daily.

The West Coast Railway Association is a charitable non profit society and Western Canada’s largest railway heritage organization. Incorporated in 1961, it now houses a collection of over 90 heritage locomotives and railcars, and operates the West Coast Railway Heritage Park, an attraction that is open daily year round in Squamish, BC.
