Memorial Day Weekend at the Nevada Northern Railway

Ely, Nev. –Annually, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum celebrates Memorial Day in a big way and this year is no exception. In recognition of their service to our country, all Veterans and Active Duty Military ride FREE on any Nevada Northern Railway Regular Excursion Trains from Friday, May 27th through Monday, May 30th. Additionally, all Nevada Northern Railway members ride free, as well. It’s the Nevada Northern’s way of saying, “thanks” for supporting the country and helping preserve its history.

In addition to the steam-powered excursions and BBQ train on Saturday, May 28, the Nevada Northern will fire-up its 104-year-old steam crane for demonstrations starting at Noon. Built by the Industrial Brownhoist Company in 1907, the crane is nicknamed “the big hook.” It lives up to that name with its ability to lift 100 tons. It was restored to operation in 2005, in part due to a Trains Magazine Preservation Grant. The Weekend will also feature a Silent Auction beginning Saturday at 8 a.m. and ending Sunday at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, May 29, the excitement continues when the Nevada Northern Railway operates its double-headed excursion trains using Locomotives 40 & 93 at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. For the steam engine enthusiast, this provides a very rare opportunity to operate not one, but both century-old steam engines by participating in the Nevada Northern’s popular Hands On the Throttle Program. This is an unusual chance to compare a high-stepping passenger locomotive with a low drivered, but powerful, freight locomotive on the same weekend.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is a National Historic Landmark and nonprofit museum – “the best…bar none,” according to the Smithsonian. Readers of Nevada Magazine have voted the NNRy “best rural museum” and “best place to take kids” for four years in a row. The Nevada Northern Railway Museum has been featured on The History Channel’s “Modern Marvels” and “American Restorations,” and on PBS. For more information, please call toll-free at 866-407-8326 or locally at 775-289-2085. Visit the NNRy website at www.nnry.com or see us on Facebook.
