Copper Thefts Disable Heritage Train

A series of break ins and resulting copper thefts have left the West Coast Railway Association’s heritage train disabled. The thieves have cut and removed valuable copper cables from the undersides of several coaches, disabling the electrical systems that provide the power for the trains lighting and ventilation systems. The volunteer nonprofit society is now struggling to find the funds needed to make repairs, which will be in the thousands of dollars.

“Our volunteers at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park work hard to restore this heritage equipment so that families can enjoy our many great events, such as Day Out With Thomas and Polar Express”, says WCRA’s President & CEO, Don Evans. “Stealing from a charitable organization and the people who donate their time and expertise is about as low as anyone could go”.

The society is now working on ways to better secure their 12 acre Squamish site and is seeking funds to repair the coaches so that the train can be ready for operation when Thomas the Tank Engine returns in June.

The West Coast Railway Association is Western Canada’s leading railway heritage organization. With Canada’s second largest collection of heritage railway rolling stock, its mission is the Preservation of British Columbia’s Railway Heritage. The WCRA’s major operation is the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish, BC, home of the famous Royal Hudson steam locomotive as well as the recently opened CN Roundhouse & Conference Centre. The WCRA also operates the locomotive 374 Pavilion in Yaletown, and West Coast Rail Tours in Burnaby. The society has some 1,500 members and is one of British Columbia’s larger charitable nonprofit organizations.
