Be the Locomotive Engineer at Nevada Northern Railway for Less$

Extended until May 5!
ELY, NV— Strike while the iron is hot – and the iron horse at the Nevada Northern Railway is red hot; ready and waiting for you. If you’ve ever dreamed about being the Engineer on an historic locomotive, you can do it at the Nevada Northern Railway — and now for a lot less money. Book your experience by April 30 and enjoy big savings. You have until October 31st to actually operate the train, but payment must be made by the end of the month.

Anyone 18 or older with a valid driver’s license can ‘Be the Engineer’ on a Nevada Northern steam or diesel locomotive – or both; no experience required (under Engineer’s supervision, of course). In fact, for the especially avid rail fan, Nevada Northern Railway offers the supreme experience of operating the locomotives WITH the train (freight cars) attached. And all locomotives and trains run out on the mainline – just as they did in the 1900s.

Prices for Nevada Northern Railway’s “Be the Engineer” program are on the website at: www.nnry.com/locorental/engine_rental.htm. But be sure and ask about the special savings.

Nevada Northern Railway Museum’s “2012 Attraction of the Year” Award by the Nevada Travel Network includes the following description: “The Ghost Train of Old Ely” as it has been romantically called, has grown into a year- round operation…So far as I know, you can’t rent a locomotive from Amtrak, but you can from the Nevada Northern, and you can drive the train yourself. The railroad’s regular schedule offers passengers the authentic experience of early railroading, and the special trains throughout the year make riding the Nevada Northern an event to remember. A class act,” said David Toll, co-founder of the Nevada Travel Network.

Nevada Magazine readers have been regular fans of the Nevada Northern Railway, with accolades including: Best Place to Take the Kids in Rural Nevada, 2007-2011; Best Museum, Special Recognition, 2010; Best Museum in Rural Nevada, 2009; Favorite Nevada Attraction, 2008; and Best Rural Museum in Nevada, 2008. And, says Jim Wrinn, editor, Trains Magazine, “A place that everyone should go visit… like stepping back in time 100 years ago!”

Additionally, Nevada Northern Railway Museum has been regularly featured on PBS and The History Channel, including “Modern Marvels” and “American Restorations.” It is featured in guidebooks all over the world, in a variety of languages, including German and Japanese.

The Smithsonian’s Curator Emeritus considers it to be the best preserved historic railroad “bar none.” Now available at the NNRy Gift Shop, in bookstores and online, Images of Rail: Nevada Northern Railway (Arcadia Publishing) by Mark and J. Joan Bassett, features 200 historic photos, many never published before.

COMING SOON: Memorial Weekend, May 25-28, Kick off Nevada Northern Railway’s Silver Anniversary of the Rebirth of Passenger Steam Operations (1987-2012) with Members Weekend, featuring train rides, speeder rides, velocipede rides, music, food and fun. Everyone invited! ALL ABOARD!
